Want to Play Roller Derby?

So you want to be a Roller Rebel?

The Roller Rebels are always looking for new skaters to fill the ranks of OUR 3 home teams and the all star travel team.

The Long Island Roller Rebels hold annual tryouts and any female 21 and older is invited to tryout. All you have to do is send an email to Violet KnockOut at VioletKnockOut@LongIslandRollerRebels.com.

When are tryouts?
The Long Island Roller Rebels hold try outs sometime in November, basically at the end of our season, so our focus can be on training new Fresh Bloods, thats right, once accepted you will be considered a Fresh Blood among the Rebels during the probationary period, until passing written and physical skills tests.

What is life like as a Fresh Blood?
During your probationary period as a Fresh Blood you will be required to make 7 practices a month, attend skate classes as well as rules discussion classes. You will bond with the Roller Rebels, learn the life of a roller girl, and most of all SKATE SKATE SKATE!

I want to play for a specific home team. Can I request a team?
Regardless of where you reside on Long Island, we have girls from all over including, the Hamptons, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Nassau and Suffolk Counties, you will be placed in a draft once you have past your probationary period. At that time you will be placed on the team that is best for you and the Long Island Roller Rebels.

I’m really, really good, I only want to skate for the Travel Team!
We are stoked that you would love to be on our travel team! We travel all over the country and sometimes even internationally! We do hold travel team try outs during our season, and you may be given the opportunity to join the travel team at that time..but keep in mind our travel team skaters have been Roller Rebels for years and have a lot of experience. The travel team also requires more time and physical committment.

I already play Roller derby for another league. Do I have to tryout?
No. We do have a skater transfer policy. Please contact CaptainMorgan@LongIslandRollerRebels.com for more information.

I haven't put skates on in 10 years, should I bother trying out?
We don't base a 100% of tryouts on skills, we are looking for females with strong positive attitudes who have something to contribute to the league. We will teach you everything, as long as you are willing to give it your all and learn!

How can I get ready for tryouts?
Come see our bouts and attend a practice! In the meantime you should also look into purchasing some skates and hit the rink! Skate as much as possible!!!
Some of the things we will be looking for in tryouts are:
Basic skills:

  • Gliding on one foot at a time
  • Crossovers
  • Balance
  • Squats

Derby Skills:

  • Skating low
  • Plow Stop
  • T-stop

Endurance:
for your skills test you will be asked to do 25 laps in under 5 minutes and 5 laps in under 1 min

Other:

  • Attitude
  • Basic knowledge of the sport
  • Ability to listen and apply new knowledge
  • Time commitment

Please go to WFTDA.com and read over the rules and skills you will need to play the sport of all female flat track roller derby

What do I need when I tryout?
Every skater will be required to wear a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, mouthguard and quad roller skates. We have some extra pads lying around and you may be able to borrow some, but we are limited on equipment, so please try to have your own gear. The rink can rent out quad skates, if you have not yet purchased your own.

For insurance purposes, you will be required to sign a waiver for tryouts.

I have already picked my name out! How can I register my name?
You will not be able to register a name until you have earned it! Once you have passed your written and physical skills tests you will be able to choose a unique name and number.

I go to school and work, will I have enough time for roller derby?
Roller derby is a big commitment: it's like a second job. You'll be expected to attend league practices for around two hours twice a week in addition to team practices which are about two hours once a week. In addition to practices, everyone is expected to work at bouts and other official events and fundraisers. We are a skater run organization, and also require all of our skaters to join a committee to remain a member of the LIRR. We're not telling you this to scare you, but we want to be honest: If the time commitment is too much, maybe being a skater isn't the right fit for you right now. There are lots of ways to join in: volunteer at bouts, join our Refferee crew or Non Skating Officials or Support Staff. Please contact CaptainMorgan@LongIslandRollerRebels.com if you are interested in volunteering.

Will I get hurt playing Roller Derby?
In Roller Derby our slogan is "It's not will I get hurt, it's when." Sure some girls have gotten by with a few bumbs and bruises along the way, but others have endured some more serious injuries. We do not require skaters to have primary health insurance, but we strongly reccomend it. Once accepted you will also receive supplmental insurance through the Long Island Roller Rebels.

I can't wait for try outs! How can I get involved NOW!
Email VioletKnockOut@LongIslandRollerRebels.com and she will help you decide the right area to volunteer in.
